OLIN conducted detailed research and analysis to develop a historic landscape report and master plan for the restoration and completion of the academy’s landscape. OLIN’s work led to a phased reconfiguration of the entire grounds, including the renovation and restoration of several features and the addition of new gardens and plantings. Essential to the planning was the desire to expose the historic structure of the landscape through key initiatives: the care and replacement of historic oaks and pines; the redefinition and enhancement of several allees; the removal of an abundance of unwanted hedges and parking; the reconstruction of an existing fountain and its context; and the maintenance and repair of paths, walls, and stair railings. Today, the grounds appropriately serve the institution and successfully host a number of events. To help secure high-quality landscape maintenance and management into the future, OLIN assisted the academy in hiring a local horticulturist to train staff, and worked with the trustees and director to ensure staff development, maintenance schedules, and proper equipment to sustain the grounds as envisioned.
