The Performing Arts Center on Bard College’s 540-acre campus is located along the Hudson River corridor between Westchester and Albany. The composition of the structure accommodates two theaters, four rehearsal studios for dance, theater and music, and professional support facilities. OLIN’s long relationship with the college from other projects, including a campus master plan, enabled the design team to work closely with the architect in order to promote a woodland walk using a plant palette indigenous to the surrounding woodland. The design preserved an oak grove on the north end of the campus and emulated the 1,500 wild acres of state property that lay beyond. A series of archaeological findings dictated the location of the curved parking lots, which mimic the shapely lines that flow from the architecture. The stainless steel and glass cladding the art center echo the sky and trees, carefully orchestrating a place to listen to and visualize art.
