The Eastman Reading Garden at the Cleveland Public Library was redesigned in conjunction with an overall renovation project that included the main building of the Public Library. Reconstructed over occupied library space, OLIN faced significant challenges in terms of soil depths and the subsequent appropriate plantings. The design utilized plantings native to the region to enclose and buffer the space from two major city streets, while creating an engaging and unique experience for those inside. The garden also provides uninterrupted views into and from the library atrium, thus linking the spaces and users. Due to the small scale and heavy use of the space, long-lasting and finely crafted materials were used to maximize enjoyment as well as durability. The collaboration of artists Maya Lin, who designed the fountain, and Tom Otterness, who created sculptural elements to the benches and gated entry way, add to the textural and tactile experience of the space. As such, it is a favorite destination for pedestrians passing through the area as well as visitors and student groups.
