This 250-acre waterfront urban park in the heart of downtown Indianapolis is an exceptional resource to the city—a host to the city’s great cultural institutions, a naturalized public waterfront, and a well-used venue on concert days, public holidays, and special events. As the city and its institutions, including the Eiteljorg Museum and the Indiana State Museum, rediscover the river and as people continue to appreciate the value of urban living, a vision was necessary to imbue greater vitality in this under-attended urban space. OLIN created a vision plan, which offers what could be made from the existing resources, in White River State Park, increasing the potential for visitors to stay and use the park rather than just pass through. Focus areas included the historical Pump House, the expansion of the great lawn, an outdoor amphitheater and concert venue, Celebration Plaza, the historic Military Park and the linear walk along the White River. The vision plan will be used to promote discussion, generate consensus, raise capital and serve as a tool to implement individually phased projects within the park.
