The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is the first national memorial to honor the fallen and recognize the service and sacrifice made by all veterans in every branch of the military. The landscape is intended to provide a natural sanctuary for remembrance and reflection while also accommodating daily use as a garden. The central component of the design is a memorial grove, a ceremonial stand of trees, a sacred space for rest and meditation surrounded by a stone wall and pool that evokes the local landscape of the Hocking Hills and its waterfalls. A tree-lined pedestrian walk surrounds this landscape while gradually rising to a height overlooking the Scioto River and back to downtown Columbus beyond. This project was implemented as part of a larger framework plan for the Scioto Peninsula in Columbus, developed by OLIN and Columbus-based landscape architects MKSK.
